Education Service team participate in national RE conference

March 3, 2025

On Saturday 1 March, five members of the diocesan Education Service staff took part in the Association of Teachers of Catholic Religious Education (ATCRE) Conference at St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, Birmingham. The delegates included Dave Legrand, who is the Chair of ATCRE and is also our diocesan Secondary Adviser -RE & Catholic Ethos, and Anna Flood and Emma Sharp, Primary Advisors, who were there to share and promote the Day by Day resources

The conference included keynote speeches and seminars given by a number of experts in the field, on the theme "Scripture at the heart."

Speaking after the event, Education Service Deputy Director Maria Cowler said,

"Attending the ATCRE Conference provided us with a wonderful opportunity to listen to and talk with a variety of speakers concentrating on Salvation History, Prophecy and the Gospels. The keynote spotlights with Brenden Thompson and Professor Bob Bowie focused on working from Scripture to reach out to all people in all circumstances.  We came away brimming with ideas and plans."

ATCRE aims to support and represent teachers of Catholic religious education by facilitating dialogue amongst teachers of Catholic religious education; providing a voice at a national level for teachers of Catholic religious education; celebrating and sharing excellent practice of Catholic religious education.

Day by Day was launched by the Diocese in January, in partnership with St Mary's University and offers curriculum resources produced by our Primary RE Advisers. Inspired by the publication of the RE Directory, To Know You More Clearly, they have been carefully developed in collaboration with Early Years teachers and Primary practitioners to enable schools to be fully compliant with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales requirements by 2026. The resources can be downloaded from St Mary's University website (see button below).
