Violent anti-immigration protests have erupted across the UK, with demonstrations taking place in a number of towns and cities including Bristol, Leicester, London, Liverpool, Birmingham, Plymouth and Belfast.

The Catholic Church teaches that we are one human family, that every person is made in the image and likeness of God, and that all human life is sacred. Speaking earlier today, Bishop Richard said:

“The violent demonstrations we are witnessing at this time are a cause of immense distress and concern to us all. A violent approach will increase tension, fear and resentment for all in our communities at a time when we should seek reconciliation and understanding.

“It is vitally important that we recognise the innate dignity and value of every human person. I call on all those within our Catholic family and beyond to pray for a rapid end to the present difficulties and a renewed openness and commitment to peace.”
