Congratulations to all those who joined the diocesan Ministry of Consolation team at the recent Mass at St Bernadette's in Crawley, celebrated by Bishop Richard (pictured above). The Diocese's Ministry of Consolation programme was started 15 years ago to help support people who felt isolated as a result of bereavement, grief and loss, while also providing a pathway for those called to this particular ministry, who are able to help support them.
The Ministry continues to grow, with 128 trained Befrienders volunteering their gifts and talents across the Diocese. Our Marriage and Family Life Project Officer, Deacon Simon South, leads the initiative, and explains more: "As our society has moved towards the separation of death and life, many people now die in hospitals or hospices, with their loved ones often unable to grieve collectively within their community. The Ministry of Consolation – which also journeys with those who are terminally ill – aims to respond to the lost, the lonely and those in emotional pain; all those who are in need of the gentle loving hand of Christ at this most devastating and painful time."
The Ministry offers regular café gatherings, providing companionship and community to those who are grieving and lonely. Speaking about the impact of the programme on a personal level, Simon said:
"Working with our wonderful team of volunteers is truly humbling and inspiring. To see the gentle hand of Christ coming to life, whether through one-to-one accompaniment, or bringing people together at bereavement cafés, is beautiful to see and be part of."
