Bishop Richard ordained Stephen O’Brien to the priesthood, during Mass at Arundel Cathedral on Sunday 4th July. The Mass, which took place in accordance with current Covid-19 regulations, was concelebrated by 24 priests of the Diocese.
Fr Stephen grew up in Sussex, worshipping at St Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Hastings. He first considered a vocation to the priesthood as a young boy, though growing older believed that God was calling him to a career in teaching. Speaking about his decision to join the seminary Fr Stephen said: “I qualified as a teacher, and enjoyed that valuable job, but, as St Augustine says, "Our hearts are restless until they rest in you, O God." I realised that God was calling me in a different direction in my mid-twenties, and, after much discernment, discovered that it was to serve God's people as his priest.”
Speaking to Stephen during his homily, Bishop Richard said: “This is a wonderful day for you, for your family, for the Diocese and, indeed for the whole Church. Every one of us is on a life of pilgrimage with the Lord and this day marks a significant step for you on that journey, as you join the presbyterate of the Diocese and look forward to a life spent in service to God’s people. As we all rejoice with you, let us pray for our seminary students and the three men who will join them in September – and pray that more will answer the call to priestly service in the Church.”
The celebration marked an important formation milestone for the newly ordained Fr Stephen. Speaking shortly before his ordination he said: “I am both delighted and apprehensive as I approach my ordination, I am looking forward to being able to serve God's people in Sussex and Surrey.”
At the end of the Ordination Mass, Bishop Richard announced that Fr Stephen is appointed Assistant Priest at St Joseph’s in Epsom. Fr Stephen will celebrate Mass in his home parish in Hastings on Thursday 8 July at 7.30pm.
