Bishop Richard celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving for Headteachers, Senior Leaders, School Governors and those leaving diocesan Catholic schools after long service, at Arundel Cathedral earlier this month.
Catholic education is an integral and essential part of the Church’s mission; making the person of Jesus known and loved and placing Him and the teaching of the Catholic Church at the centre of people’s lives. Speaking during his homily, Bishop Richard said:
"Catholic Education has a particular focus on the themes of thanksgiving, mercy and justice, enabling children of all ages to realise God's blessings for them... Thank you for all that you do in our school communities and the impact that you have, which goes far beyond anything that you imagine. Your ministry and care for our young people goes further than we can ever see."
The knowledge, dedication and commitment of approximately 5,000 teachers and support staff deliver Catholic education to more than 37,800 children across our Diocese, with our primary and secondary schools ably supported in their work and mission by 700 school governors and many more volunteers, parents, and carers.
During the Mass, specially commissioned Education Service St Philip Howard Medals were presented to all those retiring or leaving our schools who have given more than ten years' service to Catholic education. Speaking shortly after the awards were presented, diocesan Education Service Director Julie Oldroyd said:
"This Mass offers a welcome opportunity for the Diocese to celebrate all that you have achieved and accomplished. Those receiving certificates and medals here today represent a combined total of 560 years of service to Catholic education, with significant contributions made by you to your communities; thank you for your service to our schools."
