The Diocese of Northampton has announced that it is divesting from fossil fuels, which means that half of England and Wales' Catholic dioceses are now divested. Northampton announced its decision alongside 31 other faith institutions from the UK, United States, Australia, Canada, Italy and France.
Pope Francis calls for us to care for our common home in his document 'Laudato Si'. The Pope writes:
"Human life is grounded in three fundamental and closely intertwined relationships: with God, with our neighbour, and with the earth itself... Each community can take from the bounty of the earth whatever it needs for subsistence, but it also has the duty to protect the earth and to ensure its fruitfulness for coming generations."
Our Diocese divested from fossil fuels in May 2020, speaking when the announcement was made Bishop Richard said:
"Care for the world that has been given to us is an increasingly pressing need... This positive step will contribute to the common good and, I trust, pave the way for further practical action to safeguard this and future generations."
The Diocese launched an Environment Policy in 2021, and is delighted to announce that 100% of the electricity supplied by our provider in the coming months will be backed by a renewable energy generation guarantee.
The Diocese has an active Environment Group, to find out more about their work please click here. The Laudato Si’ Centre based in Salford has recently released a guide to Environmental Stewardship in Places of Worship - you can read it here
