Parishioners at Our Lady of Lourdes in Haslemere raised over £1,620 recently, holding a fundraising quiz in their church hall to support the education of eight girls living in Uganda. The majority of people in Eastern Uganda are subsistence farmers, living in scattered, often inaccessible, communities. Our Lady of Lourdes has supported children in the region for some years, with proceeds from the quiz sponsoring a shipment of school books to the area through UK charity Books2Africa.
Books2Africa's mission is to promote a culture of "readcycling" and improve the quality of education in Africa, through the collection, processing, shipping and distribution of quality books, computers and educational materials that equip people and communities to access knowledge and achieve their full potential.
Over 100 people attended the fundraiser, puzzling over a number of ingenious questions, enjoying a delicious meal, and taking part in a giant raffle – with prizes kindly contributed by parishioners and local businesses.
Many thanks to Fay Foster for sharing this story with us; the quiz was organised by parishioners Jo Allen, Suzanne Anstee, and Audrey Podmore.
