Lourdes pilgrims gather for Opening Mass, Blessing of Hands and Passage through the Grotto

July 27, 2024

Bishop Richard, vested in blue and white, bends over two pilgrims and blesses the hands of one.

The 848 pilgrims from across our community of faith who are in Lourdes will gather for Mass for the first time today, Saturday. After a welcome meeting and prayers in their hotels, the huge pilgrimage photograph will be taken. The main event of the day is the Opening Mass at 3pm. During this Mass, the hands of every pilgrim will be blessed for service with the words:

“May the Lord bless your hands for his service, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

After Mass, the whole pilgrimage will answer Our Lady’s call to St Bernadette for people to “Come in procession”, by processing from the church, through the Grotto where the Apparitions of Our Lady took place.

Saturday’s events will end with a Quiz Night in the hotels and Accueil.

May all the people of our Diocese be blessed for the service that they give and that they receive in their daily lives, to one another and to the Lord, the Word who is Life.
