Mass of Thanksgiving for School Leaders at Arundel Cathedral.

July 10, 2023

Representatives from diocesan schools joined together for a special Mass of Thanksgiving at Arundel Cathedral Thursday (6 July). The diocese has 77 schools with approximately 34,500 children and young people, 3,000 teachers and support staff and 1,000 school governors – with many hundreds more parents, carers and volunteers actively involved in supporting our school communities. Bishop Richard and members of clergy concelebrated themass which was offered for all of those who lead our schools across the Arundel & Brighton diocese. Addressing members of the congregation, the Director of the Education Service, Julie Oldroyd, said:

“Our gathering together today, for the celebration of Mass, provides us with an opportunity to give thanks for all the many joys and successes this academic year has brought our diocesan family of schools.
“I would like to thank Bishop Richard, concelebrating members of clergy and our wonderful choir from Cardinal Newman Catholic School in Hove for their part in today’s mass. On behalf of the Education Service, I would also like to thank our school leaders; thank you for your continuing commitment and dedication to the pupils and staff in your schools, manifested daily in the many ways in which you serve your communities.”

Certificates in recognition of faithful and dedicated service to Catholic education were awarded by Bishop Richard to those present who are retiring, stepping down from their roles, or leaving the diocese. Particular thanks to Ani Magill (pictured below) who, as CEO of Xavier Catholic Education Trust, has made a significant contribution to Catholic education in the diocese.

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.” 1 Corinthians 12: 4-6
