Mayfield School bids farewell to the SHCJ sisters after 150 years

October 1, 2024

This weekend, the Mayfield community gathered for a special Mass of Thanksgiving to honour two inspirational women, Sr Jean and Sr Maria of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ), as they prepare to leave Mayfield to join the SHCJ community in Harrogate. Over 200 Old Girls, colleagues - past and present - and members of the Mayfield Village community came to school to say thank you in person for this incredible gift of service.

Sr Jean was part of the community since 1957, first at St Leonards, and later as Head of Mayfield, a position she held for 20 years starting in 1980. Sr. Maria, who served as her Deputy from 1980-82 and later as a Governor, has also been a steadfast presence in the life of the school.

Writing on social media, a school representative said:

"Words can hardly express our deep gratitude, love, and admiration for these remarkable Sisters and the Sisters of the SHCJ, who founded Mayfield over 150 years ago and have continued to guide and serve us for so long. While we are assured of their continued prayers and support, their physical absence will certainly be deeply felt by all within our community.
"We wish Sr. Jean and Sr. Maria all the best as they begin this new chapter, and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts for everything they’ve done for Mayfield."
