St Oscar Romero students take on epic walking challenges to fundraise for Mary's Meals

October 4, 2024

a large group of uniformed students hold up a giant cheque in a sports hall, with a representative of Mary's Meals, who is wearing the charity's t-shirt. All look very pleased with their achievement!

Students at St Oscar Romero Catholic School, Worthing, have raised over £14,000 for Mary's Meals, a global charity that serves life-changing school meals to children living in some of the world’s poorest countries. The promise of a good meal attracts these hungry children into the classroom, giving them the energy to learn and hope for a better future. The charity feeds more than 2.4 million children every school day.

To raise this amazing sum, in May and June, 21 students from St Oscar Romero walked 65km of the Hadrian's Wall Path, and 64 students walked 43km of the South Downs by night. A phenomenal achievement!

Hadrian’s Wall Path is an epic 84-mile route which makes its way across Northumberland. The National Trail passes through some of the most beautiful parts of England, from rolling fields and rugged borderlands to the historical monuments built over 1500 years ago. Walking Hadrian's Wall trail, an ancient Roman fortification spanning across the rugged landscape of northern England, presents an exhilarating yet challenging adventure. While the journey offers unparalleled scenic beauty and a glimpse into history, it comes with its own set of difficulties that test the endurance, determination, and preparation of any traveller. The mountain challenge itself was an exhausting but memorable feat.

These monumental walks are a tradition for the School, which has in recent years also undertaken the Three Peaks Challenge (climbing the highest three mountains in the UK), the Welsh 3000’s (climbing the highest mountains in North Wales), the Wainwright Challenge (climbing the highest mountains in the Lake District) and last year walking the West Highland Way, on the West Coast of Scotland, to fundraise for different charities.

Closer to home, the night walk along the South Downs Way is also a huge challenge. The South Downs way is a spectacular and stunning route that moves through the heart of Sussex. Last year's walk ended at Amberley, and so this year's began there - with students and staff walking on overnight to Brighton. Walking the South Downs Way offers students a rewarding and enriching experience.
