The fourth Schools Singing Programme (SSP) choral event of the year took place on 8 May, involving just over one hundred pupils from St Cuthbert Mayne, Cranleigh; St Edmunds, Godalming; St Joseph’s, Guildford and St Polycarp’s, Farnham.
It was a wonderful afternoon, with pupils joining together to rehearse the liturgical repertoire they have been learning in their weekly choral lessons. Families then came to hear them sing in the parish church of Jesus Christ, Redeemer of Mankind, in Cranleigh.
Fraser Ellson, the Choral Director for Surrey, led the afternoon and was delighted to hear the progress the pupils have made in just over two terms.
The Surrey Summer Concert Series "Hymn tunes and Folk tunes" is the next venture, along with pupils' preparations for the forthcoming Good Shepherd celebration at Worth Abbey in June.
The Diocese launched its SSP in 2023, inspired by the model originally developed by the Diocese of Leeds. Through the SSP, the Diocese is able to deliver outstanding singing tuition, music education and performance opportunities to children and young people attending state primary schools in Sussex and Surrey, with expert guidance and tuition that has been provided by two full time Choral Directors, Fraser Ellson and Faye Eldret, since its inception
