The Diocese welcomes three new Permanent Deacons.

July 15, 2021

Bishop Richard ordained Séan Evans, Bernard Hill, and Ian Hunt to the permanent diaconate at Arundel Cathedral on Friday 9 July. The occasion marked an important and joyful formation milestone for the men, with the Mass concelebrated by a number of priests and deacons from the Diocese of Arundel & Brighton.

In a joint statement Séan, Bernard and Ian thanked their respective wives, Anna, Vicky, and Sandy for “their love, support and prayers” during their period of study and discernment. They also highlighted the considerable encouragement they had received from their families and parish communities saying “they would not be here today” without their support.

The Ministry of the Deacon includes administering baptism, dispensing the Eucharist, and assisting and blessing marriages. The three new deacons will begin their ministry across Surrey and Sussex, with Séan and Ian appointed to Guildford Parish and Bernard to Rottingdean.

Addressing the three men during his Homily Bishop Richard spoke of the priorities of Diaconal ministry - Service of the Word and of Charity – together with the many possibilities for the exercise of their ministry in the life of the Diocese.

The Mass took place in line with Covid-19 regulations, with those unable to attend in person able to watch the service on the Cathedral’s livestream.
